What
is a Developmental Delay ?
Any
preschool child whose speaking, language, social, emotional, or
motor
(muscle) functioning is not appropriate for his/her age level; or
a combined delay in one of the above areas in addition to cognitive
or adaptive skills may be experiencing delayed development in one
or more of these areas. Also, corrected hearing or vision that meets
criteria for severe impairment qualifies a child for services.

When
to be Concerned
|
Shows delay in commonly accepted motor milestones-
sitting, creeping, walking. Does not participate in dressing,
feeding, toileting routines
|

Communication
Child not talking by age 2.
Speech unintelligible by age 3.
Child not using 2-3 word phrases
Child does not follow simple directions
Child disturbed by own speech
|
Child shows extreme behavior well documented
over a long period across all settings.
Child does not maintain eye contact as a listener or
speaker.
Child shows a noticeable delay in social responsiveness
(pat-a-cake, peek-a-boo, bye-bye).
Child has extreme difficulty interacting with peers.
