AMERICAN  HISTORY & WORLD HISTORY (1815-1919)  --  Grade 9  --  1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

The course opens with a brief  review of 1776-1815.  The ninth grade utilizes the time period of 1815 through 1919 to provide a context for the six strands of social studies program.  Events in American history are studied within the realm of world events.  This time period is immediate predecessor to the modern era and provides excellent opportunities for learners to investigate the background for today’s issues.  A required course that will fulfill the social studies requirements for graduation.

WORLD HISTORY  --  Grade 11, 12  --  1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

World History is a study of man from prehistoric time to the present.  It concentrates on the civilizations of the Western World and includes background from Asia, Africa and the Americas.  Examination of the patterns of history through the study of significant events, people and wars.  Develops an understanding of modern world relationships.  An elective course that provides an essential foundation for college bound students.

SOCIOLOGY-PSYCHOLOGY  --  Grade 11, 12  -- 1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

Background for students to better understand man’s behavior and thinking process.  Understand self in a complex society and the effects of that society on the individual.  Study of misconceptions and of minority groups, life styles and social settings.  Examinations of values and viewpoints of today’s society.  Unify and integrate the various social sciences.  An elective course that provides excellent background for study of human sciences in college.

UNITED STATES HISTORY  --  Grade 10  --  1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

A chronological examination of our nation’s history from the 1919 to the present day.  An examination of isolationism, the “golden twenties”. World War I and II, and the analysis of our nation’s role in world affairs today as well as the future.  A required course that fulfills the State requirements in US History.

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT & ECONOMICS  --  Grade 11, 12  -- 1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

Study of the basic principles of the constitution.  Examination of functions and processes of the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.  Consideration of our personal freedoms.  Survey of political parties, electoral processes and voting.  Examination will be made of the federal judiciary, the law and the courts.  Inspection of criminal justice and the rights of the accused and study of the class of ideologies; Capitalism, Socialism, Communism and Marxism will be included.

Basic economic systems and institutions will be studied.  Examination of competition and market structures, the role of prices, and the laws of supply and demand will be covered.  Study of the Federal Reserve System, monetary policy and gross domestic product will occur.  Special consideration will be given to the American economy in terms of economic growth and stability, unemployment and inflation.  Comparative economic systems will be examined.  Passage of this course is required for graduation.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT AMERICAN GOVERNMENT  --  Grade 11, 12  --  1 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

This is an introductory college-level course designed for those who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency in the social sciences.  This course will require much more reading and writing than a comparable course at the high-school level.  There will be more emphasis on the thinking skills and analysis levels.

The student should have demonstrated solid success in the social sciences, as well as in the areas of reading and writing.  This course will fulfill the requirement of the junior year curriculum of government and economics, or it can be chosen as an elective in the senior year for those who have already completed the above requirement.

The Advanced Placement Examination of the College Board will be offered.  (Colleges and Universities establish their own policies for accounting the results of the A. P. test.)

ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY  --  Grade 10, 11, 12  --  1.25 units of credit

Course Objectives:

This is an introductory college-level American History course that will cover the period from the earliest European exploration through the decade of the 1980’s.  Not only will historical data be covered, but economic, political, cultural and geographic issues will be covered in the context as well. The course is intended for those who have previously demonstrated proficiency in the social sciences since the emphasis of this course will be on the development of critical thinking and analysis.  The Advanced Placement Examination of the College Board will be offered.  (Colleges and universities establish their own policies for accounting the results of the Advanced Placement Test.)

The student should have demonstrated solid success in previous social science courses.  This course will serve to fulfill the high school requirement for American History as a sophomore or as an elective for those who have already completed the requirement.  Registration will  be with teacher approval.

INTERVENTION GOVERNMENT & ECONOMICS -- Grade 11  --  1 unit of credit

These courses are for the student whose IEP (Individualized Education Program) specifies that he/she needs a more restrictive resource room setting for his/her Social Studies instruction.  The level of Social Studies will be individualized to the student’s developmental level while still following the appropriate course of study.
