FOREIGN LANGUAGE
FRENCH 1 -- Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 -- 1unit of credit
Course Objectives:
This course is an introduction to the French language, with emphasis on vocabulary acquisition and the study of grammar fundamentals. Basic conversational skills are developed through class participation and performance of spoken material: listening and reading comprehension are practiced regularly. Study of the culture of France and French-speaking countries includes geography, customs and contemporary life. Students must have at least a “C” average in the previous year’s English class and approval of the foreign language instructor. Students with a “B” average or better do not need approval.
FRENCH 2 -- Grade 10, 11, 12 -- 1unit of credit
Course Objectives:
The focus of French 2 is on reinforcement and expansion of the vocabulary and grammar of French 1; verb forms and tenses are stressed. Communication skills such as conversation and listening comprehension are reviewed and refined, and writing skills are introduced. Reading ability is especially emphasized through exploration of French culture and customs in the target language. Students must have at least a “C” average in French 1 or approval of the French instructor.
FRENCH 3 -- Grade 11, 12 -- 1unit of credit
Course Objectives:
French 3 offers advanced study of the language and an introduction to French literature. Students will apply a continually expanding vocabulary and advanced grammar skills to all aspects of communication, including speaking, writing and listening. Reading comprehension will focus on topics such as history, traditional French culture and contemporary life. Students must have at least a “B” average in French 2 or approval of the French instructor.
FRENCH 4 -- Grade 12 -- 1 unit of credit
Course Objectives:
French 4 is offered if sufficient demand warrants and as scheduling permits. This course will require extensive use of the language in order to develop increased facility in communication. Vocabulary acquisition and advanced study of grammar will be integrated into the exploration of literature and into individual projects on topics related to French culture. Students must have at least a “B”average in French 3 or approval of the French instructor.
SPANISH 1 -- Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 -- 1 unit of credit
Course Objectives:
This course intends to study the Spanish language and the people who speak Spanish through basic conversational areas, questions and answers, performance of dialogues and vocabulary and an introduction to the conjugation of verb tenses. Speaking and listening skills are stressed. Spanish speaking nations, cultures and customs are introduced. The influence of Spanish culture in our own nation is considered. Students must have at least a “C” average in the previous year’s English class and approval of the Spanish instructor. Students with a “B” average or better do not need approval.
SPANISH 2 -- Grade 10, 11, 12 -- 1 unit of credit
Course Objectives:
This course reinforces the skills of Spanish 1, introduces writing skills, and expands student vocabularies, structural skills, oral-audio skills. It also works to facilitate the speaking, reading, writing and understanding Spanish. Details concerning the culture of Spanish speaking countries are considered. Dialogues are used. Students must have at least a “C” average in Spanish 1 or approval of the Spanish instructor.
SPANISH 3 -- Grade 11, 12 -- 1 unit of credit
Course Objectives:
Spanish 3 is offered for those who wish to complete a major in Spanish as a foreign language. The course is offered if sufficient demand warrants. There is greater emphasis on reading, writing and conversational skills in Spanish 3. Students must have at least a “B” average in Spanish 2 or approval of the Spanish instructor.
SPANISH 4 -- Grade 12 -- 1 unit of credit
Course Objectives:
Spanish 4 is offered as an individualized study program of the Spanish language. The student will complete a series of projects in Spanish in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. There will also be periodic grammar review when deemed necessary for the student. Students must have at least a “B” average in Spanish 3 or approval of the Spanish instructor.
