FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE

LIVING TODAY  --  Grade 9, 10, 11  --  1.25 units of credit                                          

Course Objectives:

What are some things you do every day?    Grooming, baby-sitting, laundry, cooking, sewing, spending money, living and working with your family and friends and housework.  Improving these skills in your day to day life will be the main topics throughout this course.  Planning and setting goals for your future will also be covered.  The class meets five periods a week for one year.  A sewing project is included in this course. A lab fee is required.

MARRIAGE AND PARENTING  --  Grade 11,12  --  1.25 units of credit

Course Objectives:

This course is for students who plan on marrying, having a family or working with children.  One semester will cover dating, mate choice, engagement, adult relationships, marriage, divorce, single parent families, working partners, and finance in marriage.  The other semester will cover physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of the young child, pregnancy, prenatal and postnatal care, birth defects and handicaps of children, heredity and environmental influences.  A one or two week nursery school will be conducted if possible. The class meets five periods a week for one year.  Students with or without previous Home Economics courses may take this course. 

FOODS AND LIFE PLANNING  --  Grade 11, 12 -- 1.25 units of credit

Course Objectives:

Why do you eat as you do?  If you want to know how to handle total responsibility for feeding yourself or your family, weighing more or less, knowledge about nutrition for wellness, eating well for your food dollar, preparing whatever foods you desire and serving them with flair, then this is the course for you.

What roles do you play in our society?  Your major roles are as a family member and student.  In adult life your major roles are likely to be wage earner and family member.  This course will help you manage your energy, time and money so you can get what you want out of your life.  There will be a look into the future and the kinds of management problems which will confront you in your work and family.  A lab fee is required.
