ENGLISH 9  --  Grade 9  -- 1 unit of credit                             

Course Objectives:

English 9 is a study of literature and writing based on an investigation of literary themes and patterns in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama.  Instruction will focus on refining reading strategies; developing the ability to analyze and interpret literary texts; increasing vocabulary and developing word attack strategies; and communicating and extending understanding.  The student will respond to, analyze and interpret literary texts in class discussion, projects and presentations, reading journal entries, formal paragraphs and essays, and informal writing.  Writing instruction will focus on refining, developing and applying writing process strategies with formal paragraphs and essays required.  Outside reading, writing, speaking, listening, discussion, class participation, creative writing, reports, logs, journal entries, self-evaluation, presentations and projects will be required.

HONORS ENGLISH 9  -- Grade 9  --  1.25 units of credit

Students are placed in English levels based on ability, previous experience, teacher recommendation and education and career goals.

YEARBOOK  --  Grade 10, 11, 12  --  .50 unit of credit

Course Objectives:

Students will learn the basic skills needed to design and publish the W.H.S. Yearbook and will be responsible for all aspects of production.  Students will develop the skills, organizational skills and financial awareness in cooperative hands-on setting.  This is an elective Language Arts course and may not be used to fulfill the Language Arts requirement for graduation, but does help fill the elective credit requirements.  This is a full year course.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENGLISH  --  Grade 12  --  1.25 units of credit

Advanced Placement English is an integrated college level study of literature and writing based on an intensive investigation of literacy themes and patterns in English and world fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama.  Major authors and literary works, the development of literature and literary genres, literary periods and developments, and the relationship between history and literature will be studied.  Instructions will focus on refining reading strategies; developing the ability to analyze and interpret literacy texts; increasing vocabulary and developing word attack strategies; and communicating and extending understanding.  The student will respond to presentations, reading journal entries, formal paragraphs and essays, and informal writing.  Writing instruction will focus on refining, developing and applying writing process strategies with formal essays required.

The Advanced Placement Examination of the College Board will be offered.  (Colleges and universities establish their own policies for accounting the results of the Advanced Placement Test).

Students are placed in appropriate levels of English based on ability, previous experience, teacher recommendation and education and career goals.

INTERVENTION ENGLISHGrades 9,10,11,12

SPE 859, 861   1 Unit of Credit

These courses are for the student whose IEP (Individualized Education Program) specifies that he/she needs a more restrictive resource room setting for his/her English instruction.  The level of English will be individualized to the student’s developmental level while still following the appropriate course of study.
